Her marriage to Jay C. Maxham is recorded at Gratiot County (Vol. B, page 68, #44); it sounded like you had that.

The Crawford County Avalanche (Grayling, MI) Newspaper dated 12-23-1886: "J. Maxham, of Elm hall, Mich, son-in-law of Nicholas Shellenberger, died on the 15th inst. of some disease of the lungs".

Mattie (Martha Jane per property records at Crawford County, Grayling, MI); was only mentioned in one of her half-sibling's obituaries. This was for her 1/2 brother, Grant Shellenbarger whose obituary appeared in The Crawford County Avalanche (Grayling, MI) Newspaper on February 28, 1924: Grant Shellenbarger ...... born May 23, 1868 in Gratiot County.........survived by one brother, Willis Shellenbarger of Leslie, Mich, and a half sister, Mrs. Martha Sabins of Elm Hall, Mich., besides several neices and nephews..... Neither his brother or sister were able to come to be in attendance at the funeral....... She (or any other child) of Nicholas were mentioned in his brief obituary. She was not mentioned in her step-mother's obituary (although, another half-brother was). However, it is possible that her real mother was still living at the time, as her mother and Nicholas divorced.

Mattie's obituary in The Alma Record and Alma Journal; dated 11-7-1929 is: ELM HALL LOSES RESPECTED WOMAN - Elm Hall - Funeral Services were held Thursday afternoon at Elm Hall for Mrs. Mattie Sabin, who died on Sunday night at Flint. Mrs. Sabin had lived in the community during the greater part of her life and was well known and highly respected. She was a woman of high ideals and refined personality. Since the death of Mr. Sabin, a few years ago, she spent the school months in Flint, where her daughter is engaged as a teacher in the public schools. The daughter, Miss Jessie Maxim of Flint, and a son, Albert Maxim, of California, survive her. Interment was made in the Elm Hall cemetery.

Mattie's Death Record at Genesse County, Vol. 9, Page 222, #1488 has: Mattie Maxham Sabin, widow. Died October 27, 1929 within the City of Flint; she was 75 years, 7 months, and 14 days old. Occupation: None. Born in Indiana to Nicholas Shellenbarger, born Germany and Elizabeth Croix, born Indiana. Died of Pernicious Anemia. Note: Nicholas Shellenbarger was not born in Germany; but, probably spoke German, as some of his other siblings have been noted as speaking German. Age given at death would have made her birthday be about March 13, 1854.

Her children with Jay C. Maxham, were: 1) Albert Custer Maxham born April 2, 1882; died April 18, 1957 in Shasta, CA. Married several times, and had several kids each time. 2) Jesse Maxham
