EISELE / ZIMMER RESEARCH

family of Annie EISELE of PA
fact sources and writings about this individual:

Research of Kevin Everingham of MI, 1999 & 2017;

It appears that Annie EISELE, pronounced; ICELY by her "Morgan" relatives.. may have been adopted or raised by Charles Zimmer by looking at the 1880 Census (below). Was this a second husband of Anna's mother?, a relative? or unrelated? It was noted in Morgan family records that Annie Eisele was adopted. ... We know from the records below that Charles Zimmer was born 1844 in Germany and worked in glass, Mary was born 1844 in PA and they had a daughter who died young in 1887, they may have never had children of their own live to adulthood, but adopted Annie Eisele.

                       adoptive parents
                      Charles & Mary Zimmer Mary Hughes
                               |______________           | (Annie's mother)
	                                      |          |
                                              Annie Eisele (b.~1867)
                                              married Frank Beehler in 1888

is this the same Mary Hughes in 1867?
If so, it may explain Annie's adoption

1867 Bedford Inquirer, Nov. 29, 1867, PA.. "court procedings.. commonwealth vs. John Griffith. Indictment for Assault and Battery with intent to commit a rape, on oath of Mary Hughes, returned by Justice Guyer. True Bill, Verdict, Guilty of A&B. Sentenced to two months in county jail." IF this is the same Mary Hughes, the birth of Annie is about right and IF a sexual assault took place it makes sense why Annie may have been adopted out to another family. (of course there is no proof this only speculation.) Also it is hard to figure out which of the 4 to 6 "John Griffiths" from Bedford PA this may have been.

1870 related?...same Charles & Mary Zimmer's? A Charles Zimmerer married at age 24, July 12, 1870 in Otoe, Nebraska to Maria Schnur, age 20.... It is also noted that this Charles was born in Wirtemburg, Germany. possibly Wurttemberg... this could be a different Charles Zimmer because they should be closer to the same age and this was in Nebraska, but the year of marriage matches census data below (that is the only reason it's listed here)... HOWEVER.... it is important to know that when Annie Eisele Beehler died 23 April 1922, according to Shiawassee County, Michigan death certificate #5108... her mother was listed as; Mary Hughes, father unknown. No idea if this was her real mother's name or adoptive mother.

Also a family mystery, my grandmother Leora Morgan told me in 1999 that she distinctly remembered her grandmother's strong Irish accent... however I have never found a close Irish ancestor... maybe this;
1870 CENSUS explains it, (although this may be an unrelated family)

CAUTION this may not be the same family...
1870 CENSUS 80th Division, (w.Philly), Philadelphia, PA, June 8, 1870 (Lancaster Avenue, Page 44, Family #300)... "Mary Hughs, 38, b.Ireland,.. Mary E. Hughs 14, b.NY, works in cotton mill,.. Joseph H. Hughs 10, b.PA, Margaret Hughs 8, b.PA,.. Jane Hughs 6, b.PA,.. Annie Hughs 2, b.PA." Notice her name is "Annie" and her age is 2. (our Annie was b.Aug 1867) and she was born in PA. I can't explain where her name changed to EISELE unless her mother married after 1870. (this is all speculation only, and there are MANY women about the right age named Mary Hughes in PA at this same time.) It is also important to be open minded that Mary Hughes could be the maiden-name of Charles Zimmer's wife (see 1880 Census) or Annie's birth mother's married or maiden name.
1880 CENSUS Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA (page 313D, #2448) on Bradford Street... "Chas. Zimmer 36, b.~1844 Germany, manager/glass works,.. Mary Zimmer 36, b.~1844 PA, wife,.. Annie Eisele 10, Adopted, at school." different last name and clearly says Adopted. (I have now seen this Census and can confirm it says adopted, this makes me 99% sure that this is the correct Annie Eisele.)

1887 Pittsburgh, PA Death Certificate (vol.47, Pg.394, 2nd entry).. "Mary F. Zimmers, female, age 0y 10m, 1d, died 11 August 1887 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA., father; Charles Zimmers, mother; Mary Zimmers... birthplace; Pittsburgh, last residence; 1117 Bradford St. notice same street as the 1880 census. This is important because there were several Charles Zimmers in PA but this is the only one on Bradford Street in Pittsburgh. With this in mind, it's strange that in the 1900 census, Mary lists herself as the mother of 0 children, with 0 living."

Annie married Frank Beehler, July 23, 1888 at Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

1900 CENSUS S. Greensburg, Westmoreland, PA (Sheet 7A, house #121)..."Charles Zimer 56, b.Nov 1844 Germany, married 30 years,.. Marry Zimer 56, b.April 1844 PA, parents b.PA, mother of 0 children,.. Bertha Zimer 21, b.Jan 1879 PA, niece, parents both born in PA." This Charles & Mary looks very likely to be the same ones from the 1880 census. It shows they married about 1870 and immigrated to America in 1850.

1910 CENSUS Tarentum ward, Allegheny County, PA (Sheet 18A, house #401)... "Charles Zimmers 65, b.Germany,.. Mary E. Zimmers 66, b.PA, wife. married 41 years.".. they both list their parents born in Germany, and his notes an immigration year of 1850 (matches 1900 census)... he was also a "superintendent at a glass house" (seems to match 1880 census).

1920 haven't found this one yet

living with Mary's sister;
1930 Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA (Sheet 33B, household 437)... "Elizabeth Knapp 95, b.PA,.. William F. Knapp 77, b.PA, son,.. Emma Clark 66, b.PA, daughter,.. Charles Zimmer 85, b.Germany, brother-in-law,.. Mary Zimmer 85, b.PA, sister."

other possible records;

1858 according to the "Germans to America Passenger Index"... a Charles Zimmer, immigrated July 6, 1858 to New York, New York, USA, he was male, age 10, born in Germany and left the port of Bremen Germany aboard the ship; Anna, with intention to stay in the USA. CAUTION - this could certainly be a different Charles Zimmer. There are MANY Charles Zimmers from New York to Pennsylvania during this same time.

It's fairly clear that the Charles Zimmer an Inn-Keeper, of approximately the same age from Rochester, New York, was a different person. Yet another Charles H. Zimmer from Brooklyn, New York was also a German immigrant and not this same man, and a third from Queens, Long Island, NY were all born in Germany, approximately the same age but not same man. I expect there were others but it seems that the Charles Zimmer that we are looking for stayed in Pennsylvania.
