fact sources and writings about this individual:
Research of Kevin Everingham, January 2017 & 2022;

(Possible relatives) Also living in Mansfield Township in 1850 is;
John Evernham 40,.. Elizabeth Evernham 24,.. Matilda Evernham 6/12,.. Artis Evernham 69.
I only find 2 other Charles Evernham's in New Jersey in 1850;

  • Charles Everham, b.~1839 PA *
  • Charles Evernham b.~1843 NJ Son of Clayton & Ann. This is Charles V. Everingham who died in 1923.
    *The Charles born about 1839 is a possible match even being listed as born in PA. Mansfield township is geographically close to Pennsylvania. This is the Census of Salem, NJ and he is living with John Everham 40, likely his father.

    1860 US CENSUS Mansfield twp., Burlington county, NJ (Page 34, 30th June, 1860).. "#233, Charles Evernham 23, farmer,.. Susan 20,.. Anna 2,.. John 1,.. all born in New Jersey." living in this same township in 1860 is; (Page 53) Louisa Evernham 9 - living with Biddle family. (no other Everhams in this township)

    1861-1865 US Civil War Soldiers Index shows; "Charles A. Everham, Private in Company B., 12th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry, out as a Sergeant. Pension 30 March 1865 New Jersey. Pension record shows widow was: Susan Everham.".

    1880 US CENSUS Johnstown, Burlington, NJ .. "Susan A. Kirby 40, b.NJ, widow, farmer,.. Dan W. Hancock 28, newphew, farm work,.. John Everham 22, servant/ work on farm,.. Mary E. Kirby 8, daughter." This may be John, son of Charles & Susan... He isn't listed as a son here so it is a cooincidence that this "Susan" was the exact age of his mother. This Susan was likely just an employer of John Evernham. In the 1900 census of Burlington, NJ this Susan Kirby was living with her daughter George & Mary Ella Bryant.
    Also of note:
    1880 US CENSUS Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.. "George Shermer 47,.. Susan J. Shermer 40, wife,.. Carrie Shermer 17, dau,.. Charles Shermer 8, son,.. Cerinda 2, dau." This looks like the correct Susan, mother of John Everham from the 1908 info below.

    1908 A Veterans widows aplication shows; "Susan Shermer, widow of Charles Everham of Co.B, 12th NJ Inf. filed for remarried widows pension on May 15, 1908."

    Co.B online roster of 12th NJI shows "Charles H. Everham, sergeant, enrolled Aug 14, 1862, mustered into service Sept 4, 1862, died at Florence S.C. of wounds received in action at Wilderness, VA."

    Susan's info: Pennsylvania marriage records show: "George Washington SHERMER 39, married Susan Johnson EVERHAM 31 at Philadelphia, PA. (no actual date given, also see 1880 PA census above) This could be a completely different SUSAN, but it looks like she married Shermer sometime around 1871. (if this record is correct) The probability of this being a match was confirmed by the 1908 veterans widow application listed above.

    Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, Delaware Co. Pennsylvania... "Susan J. Shermer (b.18 Mar 1840, d.16 Mar 1916)" She was widowed, She died of lobar pneumonia. Originally buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Philadelphia (now defunct), all burials were removed in 1938 to Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Broomall, Delaware County, PA.
