About Hopewell, VA
Hopewell is an independent city in Virginia overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers. The city was originally known as “Hopewell Farm”, and partly developed by DuPont Company in 1914 to house a dynamite factory and was a mining community. By 1916, Hopewell became an official city and began developing. Many manufacturing companies have since established facilities in Hopewell, including the Solvay Process Company. The area is also thought, by some researchers, to be linked to mesothelioma cancer due to the many chemical manufacturers and asbestos exposure.
