Most of the information on Ira is from the research of Kevin Everingham of MI 1999-2006, Canadian Census data from Roger Harris of Ontario.

1851 Census shows Ira was 3 years old. DOB would be about 1848.
1861 Census shows Ira was 11 DOB would be abt 1850
1871 Census shows Ira was 21 DOB would be 1849/1850.
1881 Census for Brandt Co. Onandaga Twsp. Div. B2#92,
Ira was recorded as "farm hand" age 28 and she was 26. This would make his DOB 1853!.. Robert was 4, & Ernest was 5 months.
1884 Ira was the informant on his father's death certificate. Although he often recorded incorrect or inconsistant dates, he could obviously read and write well as he handled many of his family's legal papers and registrations.
1885 or 1886 - Ira and Louisa moved from Brant Co. Ontario to Arenac or Huron County Michigan.
1900 CENSUS Turner, Arenac, Michigan (Sheet 3B, Family #53) June 2, 1900 I believe that most of these dates were recorded incorrecly and were likely just rough guesses at the time.... Ira Ervingham 48, b.Feb 1852 MI, laborer,.. Laurie should be Louise 46, wife, b.Nov 1853 Canada, mother of 8, 6 children living, year of immigration 1886, 13 years in the U.S... Robert 21, son, b.Dec 1878 CAN, laborer,.. George 19, son, b.Sept 1880, CAN, laborer,.. Annie B. 17, dau, b.Dec 1882 CAN,.. Charles 14, son, b.Oct 1885 CAN, at school,.. Edith 12, dau, b.Sept 1887 MI, at school,.. Alice 10, dau, b.April 1889 MI, at school. all are listed as able to read, write & speak english.
1910 CENSUS Onaway, Presque Isle, MI: lists 6 children, 5 living. (what about Emma?)
It is possible that her death was put behind them and not thought about due to her dying so young and so long ago. in the last census she claimed to be the mother of 8 children and 6 were still living, by 1910 the oldest boy "Robert" had also died. It's also possible that in 1910 she was claiming 6 children "Who lived to adulthood" and was no longer counting the ones who had died as babys.

When Ira died 6 Jan 1924, he was listed as 65 yrs, 6mth, 21 dys old. This would make his DOB 16 June 1858!?... His true date of birth remains a mystery although I am inclined to be more trusting of the earliest records which lean towards 1848 to 1849.

Note: Family bible information from "Marv Everingham", Ira's great grandson, states that Ira's date of birth was 1858 in "York State" which means the State of New York. 2 other family bible's also show 1858. This is clearly what he believed his birthdate was.

Ancestors & Descendants of Ira Everingham printed 1998/99,
for "Theory & Fact" on Ira's age.

see additional info on this family in the book: The Everingham Family of MI, (c)2006
since writing this book, I am even more inclined to believe he was born in 1848, which seems more likely to get confused with 1858. If a 3rd edition of this book is printed, I will likely use that for his date of birth.
