1874 In January, 1874, Henry Eichler advertised ten acres for sale on Michigan Avenue, Lansing, Michigan, east of the Depot. I believe John Everingham purchased it as a tree nursery.
1875 The Lansing Republican, Jan 22, 1875, Lansing, Michigan.. "Ten acres of choice fertile land belonging to Henry Eichler, have been sold to J.J. Everingham. He intends to carry on the nursery business of fruit-trees, vines, evergreens, etc. Mr. Everingham has a practical knowledge of the busines, gained at one of the famous Rochester (NY) nurseries." Feb 2nd, 1875, Real Estate Transactions, K. Eichler to John J. Everingham, ten acres on northeast corner, sec 15, Lansing, $2,000.
According to the Lansing Republican newspaper, on December 3rd 1875, John Everingham petitioned the Lansing council for payment of $350 for land taken 297/1000 of an acre and trees destroyed while widening Michigan Avenue. Within a few days the updated estimate of trees was 1500. The recommendation by Dec 7th, to the city clerk was to draw an order of $25 in favor of Mr. Everingham. The unpaid loss here is equivilant to $9,500 today. This action may have ruined his business possibilities in MI. (see 1877 below)
